by Stewart Reuben [from the tournament bulletin]

It’s hard to believe this is the 18th Lloyds Bank Masters. I wonder if Leonard Barden and I would have taken up the challenge of starting the event if we’d known it would take up such a large fraction of our lives. We set out with some very clear objectives in mind when devising the format and all these have been fulfilled many times over. This may be the last of the series, but it is clear the sponsor must have been highly satisfied with the value for money, otherwise it would have finished many years ago. We wanted an event partially to replace the Whitby and Chess Magazine Festivals that each lasted two weeks in the summer. The opportunities offered here for international play have spiralled out of all recognition because the Masters format has been so widely copied.

Dibyendu Barua has played in all the Lloyds Bank Masters except one since 1982. That’s a very good try to be our most faithful competitor but he made the mistake of being too young. Nine year olds just didn’t travel all the way to England for a chess tournament in 1977. That’s changed now, of course. The record holder is Dan Mayers, who has taken part in all but one of the tournaments and that one was due to ill-health - I think. He believes he recovered in time to take part in that one too and I don’t have the complete set of bulletins on hand to check this. Of course, a number of other players took part in the 1977 event, such as Jon Speelman, Michael Basman and Richard O’Brien.

Since this is the qualifying tournament for the Intel Speed Chess Challenge it is hardly surprising we have a bigger and stronger entry than ever before. Since this was announced I have been inundated with requests for financial support from grandmasters and international masters. Naturally the money set aside for this purpose ran out very early. 32 grandmasters and 34 masters are taking part. 41 countries are being represented. By contrast, we could only muster 2 GMs and 4 IMs from 66 entries in 1977.

Perhaps we over-accelerated the first round by following normal rules and pairing the top quarter v second quarter. This resulted in about a third of the games being drawn. Top third against second third might have been more sensible. But we have never before had a tournament in which nearly 75% of the players were rated. Writing this after the fourth round (having started two rounds ago), nobody has succeeded in reaching 4/4. Some think a Swiss should build to a giant climax in the last round with two people on 100%, as in a knock-out. I like to see competitive chess.

Naturally I would have liked to see the event continue forever. So many friends, so many new faces and so many people who have clearly been encouraged to develop their potential as players. But life isn’t like that. At least we are going out with a bang not a whimper.

The Guardian, 22 August 1994 (Leonard Barden): "The 10-year-old Londoner Luke McShane broke another record last night when he met his first grandmaster in the Lloyds Bank tournament at the Cumberland Hotel in London and scored a remarkable draw.
McShane, who comes from Clapham, shared a point with Romuald Mainka, 21, one of Germany’s top players, after a 56-move game lasting nearly six hours. The young prodigy, who broke by four months the achievement of Samuel Reshevsky of the United States in 1922, is by far the youngest Briton to score against a grandmaster, the second highest title in chess. The previous youngest, Nigel Short and Michael Adams, who are both currently challenging for the senior world title, were both aged 14.
At the age of eight, McShane became the youngest World Chess Federation master, and at nine, in last year’s Lloyds Bank event, he became the youngest European to qualify for a world ranking."

The Guardian, 30 August 1994: "Alexander Morozevich, aged 17, set a UK tournament performance record yesterday when he won the Lloyds Bank Masters in London with nine wins and a draw, writes Leonard Barden. The Moscow student’s rating [2970] for his 10 games has been bettered only by Bobby Fischer and Anatoly Karpov."

The Guardian, 10 September 1994 (Leonard Barden column): "A star was born at Lloyds Bank last week, where Alexander Morozevlch, 17, demolished his opponents with brilliantly unconventional play. The Russian teenager reached his grandmaster norm with three games to spare, ended with a record 9½/10 in the UK’s strongest ever open, and qualified for the £100,000 Intel Grand Prix. Morozevich’s games appear to be derived from the original guru of Russian chess, Mikhail Tchigorin. He developed knights à la Tchigorin at c6 and e7, often swapped off his bishops, and played archaic openings. Tchigorin used the Centre Game in pre-revolution championships around 1903."
