Introduction by Stewart Reuben (Tournament Director)

In a way the event started on Thursday, August 19th [1993]. 6 year old Tania Sachdev (India) played a challenge match against 8 year old Emily Emanuel (London). It was billed as the first international Micro-match and resulted in a 1-1 draw. This netted a good photo in The Times and 2 radio broadcasts, thus justifying the exercise.

We have 226 players from 31 countries competing including a record number of 21 GMs. These figures include various fillers. Our record entry is around 250. Numbers have dropped slightly in the last couple of years. This may be due to the recession. Thus the Kasparov v Short match may seem to have had a disappointing zero impact. On the other hand, without it numbers might have been well down.

Last year Paul van der Sterren's main claim to fame was that he started with 0.5/3. During the last few months he has won the Dutch Championship and qualified from the Interzonal in Biel. Obviously last year's Lloyds Bank provided a toughening learning experience. He has learnt well and raced away to 5/5.

As so often in the past, the main news interest has been in people even smaller than me. Luke McShane's (who beat me two years ago in a competitive game) achievement in becoming the World's youngest rated player has captured the interest of the world media. He appeared on Newsround and News at Ten after the fifth round. There was also a huge photo on the front page of The Daily Telegraph. Of course these things provide problems and Luke came under some undesirable pressure. One must hope the pluses outweigh the minuses.

The chess has been hard-fought. So what's new?
