Holland beats England in chess contest

The annual double-round chess match between England and Holland took place on Saturday and yesterday at Elvetham Hall, Hartley Wintney, Hampshire. The event, which was sponsored by Lansing Bagnall Ltd, looked likely on paper to be an evenly contested affair. Both sides lacked some of their best players, who were playing in tournaments abroad.
In the first round the Dutch won by 5½ points to 4½. In the next round, after starting as though they were going to win, the English side collapsed and ended with 4 points to the Dutch 6 points, so that the Dutch won the match by 11½ points to 8½.
The score was a just reflection of the two days' play. Each team consisted of 10 players, the top eight being male seniors, the ninth board a woman player and the tenth a junior. [individual results as above]
