A peculiarity of this tournament was that the time limit for the first session of play varied from round to round. Some games were played at 40 moves in 2 hours 30 mins, others (evening games?) at 36 moves in 2 hrs 15 mins (including rounds 1 and 5 - possibly others). - JS

§ A second peculiarity: eagle-eyed readers of the above crosstable may notice that both A.P. Smith (no.38) and J.Rety (no.47) are recorded as beating G.Reuther (no.49) in round 7. This is not an error. The game Reuther 0-1 Smith was the scheduled round 7 game, while Rety 1-0 Reuther was played as a sort of round 6½(!), to make up for the game which Reuther was deprived of playing in round 6 as a result of Miles's untimely withdrawal and thus to ensure that he was able to play nine games. The bulletin does not record when the extra game was played off.

Prizes - 1st J Plaskett (Sheffield) £400 + trophy); 2-4th M Hebden (Leicester), C Crouch (London), J Rigo (Hungary), H Westerinen (Finland) £87 each.

IM norms: Colin Crouch (2nd norm); Mark Condie (2nd norm); J Rigo (final norm); U Slutzkin (1st norm); John G Nicholson (2nd norm)
WGM norm: Sheila Jackson (1st norm)

Organised by Suzzane Wood (Accountancy Age), Richard O'Brien (Lewisham CC)
Arbiters: Bob Wade, Richard O'Brien, Simon Gillam

The following text appeared in the bulletin following the score of Dizdar-Miles in round 5 and was presumably written by organiser/bulletin editor Richard O'Brien...

"Black now sealed (this round was 36 in 2½ hours) with virtually no compensation for two minor pieces & then withdrew claiming exhaustion so 1-0. Exhaustion may certainly have been true BUT within six hours he had completed & telephoned his fortnightly column to Chess Express. Less than 48 hours later he was lecturing at the Candidates matches §, four days later was playing in the German League & two days further on was playing an exhibition match against Hort. All this time he was writing 750 words a day on the Kasparov-Korchnoi match for Chess Express. ALL these commitments had been finalised BEFORE he agreed to play in this event. Two other grandmasters were available but were passed over in favour of the England number one. More than one International Master were competing to have a chance of gaining a GM norm. In the case of Ian Rogers (who had also lectured at the Candidates) his chances of a GM norm now became zero although he was now sharing the lead. Miles knew this at the time of his withdrawal." § The Candidates Semi-Finals, Korchnoi v Kasparov and Smyslov v Ribli, were held at the Great Eastern Hotel, London, from 21 November to 16 December 1983.

London Simul by GM Janos Flesch, 30(?)§ November 1983

12 boards - Flesch scored +9, =1, -2

Wins: A Rangarajan, PN Sharma, JT Ryan, JA Philpott, Miss L Wilkinson, T Greenwood, L Walton, Susan K Walker (now Lalic), G Knepler
Draw: C Nigel J Rose
Losses: Andrew P Smith, R Abadi

Only ten days after this simul, Janos Flesch and his wife died in a car crash near Whitstable, Kent, on his way to another tournament at Ramsgate.

§ Date not certain but we know it was played after a long game played by Flesch in the tournament, which I think might have been the seventh round.

Date Notes
9 August 2021 First upload of this tournament here, or anywhere else, as far as I can tell. The bulletin has 98 (out of a possible) 226 games from the 1983 Lewisham International, plus four games from a weekender which followed it and three games from a simul given by GM Janos Flesch during the tournament.
14 October 2021 Ian Rogers kindly sent me the score of his game vs PK Singh (rd 1). Thanks, Ian. Running total of games now 99.
19 April 2022 John Nicholson kindly shared his scores from this tournament with me. We already had seven of them: the two additional ones to complete the set are his round 2 game vs Casa and round 3 game vs Zak (both draws). Many thanks to John.
