BRITISH CHESS FEDERATION GRADING LISTS FOR 1970
1. The BCF National Grading List for 1970 covers all play in the year ending 30th April, 1970. Where less than 30 games have been played in the year, performances in the previous year are added to bring the total up to 30 games. Players so included are noted by an asterisk. In no circumstances is anyone included with less than 10 games in the year.
2. The number in the list is 39, compared with 37 last year. There has been a downward shift, with the numbers down to 3a falling from 17 to 12, whilst those in 3a increased from 20 to 27.
3. J Penrose has fallen from 1a to 1b and has been just overtaken by R. D. Keene. W. R. Hartston has slightly improved his position in 2a, and A. J. Whiteley has returned to 2a after one year in 3a. The most striking feature of 2b is the return of L. W. Barden to active play. Many young players have done very well, with S. Webb coming up from 3b to 2b, and M. J. Corden and J. J. Carleton from 4a to the top of 3a.
4. Those who appear in the National List for the first time are Simon Webb (London University), M. J. Corden (Oxford University and Bolton), J. J. Carleton (Sutton Coldfield and Liverpool University), J. L. Moles (Oxford University), G. N. Henderson (Oldham), P. R. Markland Oxford University), P. C. Griffiths (Solihull), T. Wickens (London University and Bradford), R. R. Smith (Oxford University and Kent), and J. E. Scholes (Brentwood). This reflects the great strength of University chess at the present time.
5. R. D. Keene’s place in 1b completes his qualification for the title of British Master. Earlier this year, the Glasgow University player D. N. Levy was awarded the title by virtue of having been awarded the title of F.I.D.E. International Master for his performance in the West European Zonal. The British Master title is granted for one appearance in 1a, two in 1b, one in 1b and two in 2a, or four in 2a. The present holders are J. M. Aitken, C. H. O’D. Alexander, L. W. Barden, V. Berger, R. J. Broadbent, P. H. Clarke, W. A. Fairhurst, M. J. Franklin, J. A. Fuller, H. Golombek, D. M. Horne, R. D. Keene, C. Kottnauer, D. N. Levy, J. E. Littlewood, P. S. Milner-Barry, J. Penrose, Sir George Thomas, and R. G. Wade—a total of 19 players.
6. D. Wright, by his performances at Hastings in 1967-68 and 1968-69, and M. J. Corden by his performances at Hastings in 1968-69 and in the 1969 B.C.F. Championship have completed their qualifications for the title of Candidate Master.
7. The Scottish Grading List, sponsored by the Glasgow Chess League, is now regularly issued. The notation is similar to that of the B.C.F. list; and although it is never possible to be sure that the performance levels are strictly comparable, they are probably close enough to give a reasonable indication. In the July, 1970, list, D.N. Levy was put at 229, C. W. Pritchett at 225 (i.e. both in our 2a), R. M. McKay at 215, and G. Bonner at 209 (both in our 3a).
8. The Union Lists have been merged in a different manner this year to exclude all references to grades below 3a. This completes the change to grading numbers which were first published in Union Lists in 1965. The Union designations have been retained with the club details.

NOTES
Guide to BCF Grade Conversion
When the BCF grading system came into being, grades were published as shown in column 1 below. I believe the underlying three-figure grades were calculated but the published figure was a code such as 1a, 1b, 2a, etc. With the advent of FIDE (or, as they are usually known, Elo) ratings, there was a commonly used conversion formula which was (BCF x 8) + 600 = FIDE (as shown in column 3). These days I believe the conversion formula is as per column 4 - (BCF x 7.5) + 700 = FIDE.
